The series was done in Toon Boom Harmony, where we introduced post-production lighting on the 2D characters. Belfast-based animation studio Sixteen South is developing a 2D animated series based on popular Canadian kids’ book A Horse Named Steve, written by author-illustrator Kelly Collier. When he finally has to give up, he realizes he's now the only animal WITHOUT something tied to his head, and that makes him special. The 2D-animated comedy series (52 x 11 minutes) revolves around a self-absorbed horse and his endless schemes to capture attention and stand out from the crowd. However, when all the other animals in the forest start wearing things on their head, he bucks the trend and stands out with his natural no-horn look.

Whether it is training, rigging support, consutling services to step up your animation products, Toon Boom has a network of animation professionals here to help you achieve new levels of success. In the sequel, he has to compete in a relay race with a turtle and a snail on his team, and learns the lesson that teamwork is more important than winning. When Steve finds a beautiful gold horn lying on the ground in the forest, he realises he has found his path to the exceptional! We were really excited about working on the series because it was just so clear that A Horse Named Steve ticked all the boxes we look for when looking at developing an animated series.

Colin: It all started when we read an article from Kidscreen that listed some great books that could be considered for TV adaptations. With a lovely message to enjoy who you are and what makes you unique, this delightful picture book combines great facial expressions and the right amount of snark for a very fun read.

Perfect book for parent's to read out loud and I dare you not to be charmed by Steve and his journey of wanting to be exceptional only to realize that he was in ways that are entirely his own. So when he finds a beautiful golden horn while walking through the forest, he eagerly ties it to the top of his head. Throughout the story, Collier interweaves humorous commentary and some definitions (such as for devastated: “That means really, really bummed. There some fabulous vocabulary words and phrases incorporated into the narrative like "devastated" and "lo and behold. When Steve finds a beautiful gold horn in the forest, he realizes he has found his path to the exceptional! Blue explains that “clouds bump and tumble in the sky, / but here inside we’re warm and dry, / and all the thirsty plants below / will get a drink to help them grow! It’s amazing to see how far Steve has come,” said Collier, “Particularly because he started out as a little doodle, I made to fill an empty picture frame!
