But because I was so determined to solve the problem, I felt confident I could overcome these adverse outcomes. I have personally improved after reading this book, but more importantly I am just having more fun playing the game! There are four foundations to building a successful game—expectation management, strategy, practice, and a sharp mental game. I’m in my early 40s and wish a mentor, coach, or my dad had put a book like this in front of me when I was 9 years old (albeit the data Jon references was not available in the 1990s, but you get the point).

The following is an excerpt from Jon Sherman’s The Four Foundations of Golf , a complete guide to golf that a player of any level can use to lower their scores and increase their enjoyment of the game. I would not say this is a revolutionary book, but, again, some good wisdom to be found here and there. I would recommend this book to anyone who (or is thinking of) swinging a golf club… Male, Female, Teen. Jon does an amazing job at quantifying the specific areas of your game that you need to improve if you want to start scoring better. If you want to become a better golfer, you will need to learn to dig in when things aren’t going your way and change your habits. But because this game can be so challenging and mentally exhausting at times, adding a bit of grit is almost necessary for most. The book draws on proven methods in various topics, including expectation management, strategy, practice methods, and sharpening your mental game.

But since the author is apparently a plus handicap, perhaps he could have added a little on what he sees as the fundamentals of the swing. But to this day, despite what I consider a very high grit level, there are still rounds where I have to struggle to stay engaged. The focus on how to improve your game without offering swing advice is an approach that can help a lot of players who are caught in an unending cycle of terrible quick tips from golf magazines and youtube instruction. If you are reading this book to become the absolute best golfer and want to lower your handicap, this chapter will be vital, especially if you lack grit. If you like what I've been doing on Practical Golf, you will find this book far more comprehensive and organized than anything I have ever done. I am confident a golfer of any level can pick up this book and take their game to the next level with just a few of the many lessons within. As I kept slowly chipping away and celebrating my tiny accomplishments, I was also proving my new identity. In terms of advice for things you can try out with your swing, the biggest one for me was Tour Tempo… wow.

While you can reference specific areas of Jon’s book directly without issue, I highly recommend you read Part 1 first. Jon accomplishes exactly what he set out to do with his writing, which is to 1) spell things out clearly with little room for interpretation and 2) communicate in a simple and straightforward manner. There are four foundations to building a successful game - expectation management, strategy, practice, and a sharp mental game. Jon provides bits of advice on key aspects of the game that he has received and tried out throughout his golf journey. The goal of a golf book should be simple—get you to shoot lower scores—but so often they're bogged down by technical jargon and theoretical filler. And looking at statistics on average shot percentages for example 120 yards hitting it within 20 feet is actually a good shot.
