Description
As time progresses, we begin to understand why they were brought together, even if they don’t know themselves yet. Mr Abdulhak flew out of Britain the following day, around 24 hours before Ms Vik Magnussen’s semi-naked body was discovered. Even though it begins slowly as readers get to know the characters, it builds up quite quickly as our protagonists encounter more twists and turns than expected. Something is putting him on edge and, as the chapters progress, we get insights into Alex’s early years and the secrets he has kept buried, hidden from Beth and others.
I couldn’t have asked for more, really, and feel so proud that readers are continuing to discover it and recommend it far and wide. Interestingly he’s surrounded by equally unlikeable characters, including a single pregnant woman Beth brings into their house.Nothing gets me giddier than a crime fiction novel that requires the reader to use their brain and their wit to get to the conclusion. Hours after her death, the only suspect in the case, Farouk Abdulhak, the son of one of Yemen’s richest and most powerful men, fled the UK to Yemen.
The ending is what shocked me the most, I was very confident on how I saw the plot would end, and twist at the end was something I did not see coming. Gendron murdered 10 black people in a mass shooting in Buffalo, New York, in May 2022 while livestreaming the attack.
I find that they will want to make an example of me being a son of an Arab, being … a son of someone rich. A crime novel, domestic in its nature and deadly in its outcome, The Only Suspect has me salivating for more novels written by Louise Candlish, she has a skill that isn’t easily replicated.
Filled with deception, love and flawed characters, l flew through this tense mystery trying to work out what wasn’t right , the twists that I didn’t see coming …. However, when Beth tells Alex about the development of a nature trail right behind their home, Alex becomes very anxious, because he has a very dark secret and the landscapers may inadvertently be about to reveal it! Read the book in a few days as like her other titles once you pick up the book it grabs you from the very start and keeps you guessing until the end. That's until Beth announces the creation of a nature trail on a local site that's been disused for decades and suddenly Alex is a changed man. The Rick we initially meet is likeable and it’s hard to see how or why he’d have a college friend (now roommate) as arrogant and narcissistic as Rollo.
If you like more slow drawn out thrillers that are very character driven definitely check this one out. Oh, and lets invite a homeless colleague in to our home, who happens to be pregnant, without discussing it first. David Miliband, then foreign secretary, personally intervened, promising to do all he could to ensure the "shocking" case was resolved. Thanks to NetGalley, the author and publisher for an Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for an honest review. Black skies would have made a more fitting backdrop, some monstrous winter storm that tore the house from its foundations, but as it transpired the moment he'd been dreading for twenty-five years came on a still, gentle morning in May.
